Aqua Jogging Checklist

Before you begin any workout, it's best to be prepared — mindset, warm up, and the proper equipment. Here's a Top 10 list of things to do before and during your aqua jogging workouts.

1. Plan Out Your Workout

Plan aqua jogging sessions just as you would a running workout. If alternating with actual running, avoid two strenuous workouts on back-to-back days — use the pool as a recovery session instead.

2. Use Your Aqua Jogging Belt

By far the most important accessory. Unless you're aqua jogging exclusively in shallow water, you'll need a flotation belt to keep your head safely above water and let you focus on your workout.

3. Aqua Jogging Gloves

If chlorine-treated pools irritate your skin, gloves are your solution. Durable, well-fitted, and reasonably priced — one pair will last several years.

4. Water Exercise Footwear

Aqua jogging shoes are designed specifically for water running, with soles that propel water away from your feet so you can focus on form instead of kicking away water.

5. Other Helpful Accessories

A waterproof heart rate monitor helps measure intensity (distance doesn't translate well in a pool), and a waterproof MP3 player drowns out pool noise and makes any workout go faster.

6. Proper Warm Up

Always designate ample time to warm up and cool down — treat this like a running or treadmill workout. Water is a natural resistance device, so give your muscles time to acclimate, especially your hamstrings.

7. Focus on Form

Keep your upper body erect, not leaning forward — a natural first-timer tendency. A companion or bystander observing your form can help coach you.

8. Use Your Arms Properly

Don't swing your arms across your body. Proper movement is forward and backward, hands in a loose fist, from just below the water surface back to the side of your hips.

9. Add Variety

Cross training is key to a successful fitness regimen. Stick with the same workout for about two weeks, then change it to keep your mind clear and motivation high.

10. Make It Fun

Use music as a motivator, vary your workouts every couple of weeks, and get a workout partner involved. Start with shorter sessions and build up duration to prevent burnout.
